How far back your logs reach depends on your system's activity, the number of devices, and your logging level:

• INFO level (Default): a typical Site retains days to weeks of main.log history.
• DEBUG or VERBOSE level: on large sites, logs can consume the 250 MB limit within minutes or hours.

By default, the Media Server rotates log files based on size only. You can also configure the server to rotate logs at fixed time intervals (minutes, hours, or days) using Split File by Time in the Desktop Client. When you enable both limits, the server rotates the log file as soon as it reaches either the size or time threshold - whichever comes first.

Audit Trail, Bookmarks, and Event Log

The Media Server stores the audit trail, bookmarks, and event logs in the mserver.sqlite file located in the server directory. Each data type has a different retention rule:

Audit trail

The server retains audit trail data for 183 days.

Event log

The Media Server retains event logs for 30 days or 100,000 events, whichever limit is reached first. You can change this limit in the Server configuration file.

Bookmarks

Bookmarks tie directly to your recorded video archive. When the Media Server deletes old footage, it automatically removes any bookmarks that occur before the oldest remaining footage for that camera. For example, if a camera holds 30 days of archived video, it also holds approximately 30 days of bookmarks.
