External NAS Storage Issue
AnsweredI have configured an External Synology with 40TB of Storage for the recordings. It has been working well for a month until now. I believe the space reached capacity and now it's telling me that it is inaccessible.
My understanding is that the Server would override the oldest data when required so not sure why it would reach full capacity and then stop working.
The only option I seem to have is to delete the location but I need to ensure that the past recordings will not be affected by this and I can reindex them without any issues.
Currently no recordings are workings so I can only see live footage.
Thanks, John.
Can you please provide some assistance with this?

Hi Norman,
The Recycle Bin is disabled on all folders. It is running SHR (Synology Hybrid Raid) and reserved space should be available if required. I just need to know why the Server is not overwriting data as needed. I can see from the Storage Analytics that Calanders of all cameras is showing 28days+.
There is very limited configuration in the Storage configuration to modify settings for overriding options, etc.
Can you please assist me in understanding why the Server is not overriding data as required.
Thanks, John.

Hi John Pezzopane,
Did you check the reserved space? Is it >=10%?
If the reserved space is too low, which might occur in case of RAID or JBOD, the system might have difficulties to delete data in time. -
Hi Norman,
Isn't the reserved space configured by the NXW software when you add the storage. I would assume it would allow for this automatically or am I missing something?
Obviously, we are going to configure the storage with raid enabled or do you recommend otherwise??
As I am having a major fault right now and not recording at this time, what do you suggest is the best course of action here. I need an answer to resolve this please. This is a 75-camera system for a very large client. Thanks, John.

Hi John Pezzopane,
The reserved space it set automatically, however when people use RAID or JBOD, the server applies the reserved space that applies to a single drive, and treats the drives a one big drive.
I would configure my external storage as follows:
- Add each drive as an independent drive, this way the load and thus also the wear for the drives is equally divided. See also THIS support article.
- If data retention is important, I would allocate part of the drives for backup storage in the VMS. See also THIS support article.
For now, if you increase the reserved space, it will take some time to free up space, but once there is enough capacity available, the system should continue to record on the storage.
Ps. From v6.0 the issue will be resolved for new systems, and we always set 10% for the reserved space, regardsless if it is a single drive, Raid or JBOD.
