Nx Witness — roadmap for native Rocky Linux support
AnsweredDear Network Optix team,
We are evaluating video management systems as an alternative to Avigilon Unity Video 8, and Nx Witness is our preferred option. However, our corporate infrastructure policy requires Rocky Linux for all Linux servers.
Our intended deployment would run Nx Witness Media Server natively on Rocky Linux, either on bare-metal hardware or in a virtual machine running Rocky Linux. Using Ubuntu as the host or guest operating system is therefore not an option. We would also prefer a fully supported native installation over a container-based deployment.
Could you please clarify:
- Is native Rocky Linux support on your product roadmap, including an officially supported installation package, ideally in RPM format?
- If so, which Rocky Linux versions and Nx Witness editions would be supported, and is there an indicative release timeline?
- If this is not currently planned, could a native Rocky Linux deployment be supported through an enterprise agreement or a platform certification process?
Our requirements also include Active Directory/LDAP integration, multi-site management, recording failover, and an API for automating deployment and configuration through Ansible.
Official Rocky Linux support is the main unresolved requirement in our evaluation.
Thank you for your guidance.

Hi Petr Šlapák,
Thank you for considering Nx Witness, and for laying out your requirements so clearly.
Unfortunately, the answer is no. Nx Witness VMS doesn’t support Rocky Linux, and native Rocky Linux support isn’t on our roadmap. Ubuntu LTS is the only Linux distribution we test and support for our VMS. That focus lets us validate every release thoroughly and deliver updates and security fixes reliably on one well-defined platform.
Currently supported Linux versions are Ubuntu 20.04, 22.04, and 24.04 LTS. You can find the full list here:
https://support.networkoptix.com/hc/en-us/articles/205313168-Nx-Witness-Operating-System-SupportWe know this means Nx Witness may not meet your infrastructure policy, and we’d rather tell you clearly now than leave it open. If your organization can allow an exception for dedicated VMS servers, either Ubuntu or Windows Server, Nx Witness covers the rest of your requirements: LDAP/Active Directory integration, multi-site management through Nx Cloud, automatic server failover, and a documented REST API you can automate with Ansible.
Thank you again for your interest in Nx Witness.
Best regards.
