The problem in version 6.1.0.42176 Live Streaming Time Limit Reached
AnsweredHello, today we updated to the new version 6.1.0.42176, and we are getting the error "Live Streaming Time Limit Reached" on different cameras at different times. What could be the problem? We didn't have this issue with the previous version 6.0.7

Hi Vasic3,
To disable the notification, please follow the steps below based on your System:
- Nx Witness Professional: Simply add additional Professional licenses for your devices.
- Nx Witness Enterprise: You will need to enable Live Viewing Services.
Best regards.

Norman could you clarify how the live viewing works starting in version 6.1
Will privileges need to be purchased to have live viewing beyond a time limit for the enterprise installations? Previously it was not limited in any way.

Hi Greg
This notification was introduced in version 6.1 and triggers when the number of connected devices exceeds your available license channels (Nx Witness Professional) or credits (Nx Witness Enterprise) and lasts for 30 seconds, and repeats itself every 10 minutes.
For example, if you have 50 channels but 60 connected devices, the notification will appear on those 10 additional devices. It displays for 30 seconds and recurs every 10 minutes.
To resolve this and clear the notifications, you would simply need to add 10 additional license channels or Services to your account.
Kind regards.

Same situation here with the latest 6.1 updates.
Does it stop recording?
I have 4 Pro and 4 Start licenses.
Do I need to buy 4 new Pro license to replace the already paid for start licenses?
Can I simply downgrade and get back to a working system?
Does this also affect mobile viewing?
0 -
Hi Ryan,
Here is a breakdown of how these changes affect your system:
- Recording Continuity: Your system will not stop recording. The update introduces a notification regarding license compatibility, but it does not disable your cameras or interrupt your footage storage.
- License Compatibility: You do not need to purchase new Pro licenses to replace your Starter licenses. If you currently have 4 Professional channels and a 4-channel Starter pack (totaling 8 channels), the system should continue to function as expected, unless you have more then 8 cameras connected to the system. If you encounter any functional limitations, please let us know immediately so we can investigate.
- Downgrading: Yes, you can downgrade to version 6.0.6. This will remove the notification and return the interface to its previous state.
- Mobile Client Viewing: The notification is visible across all Clients, including the Mobile client.
With kind regards.

We recently received feedback via an anonymous, disposable email account regarding the live streaming changes in version 6.1. While the messages violated our Code of Conduct regarding tone, we believe in transparency and want to address the concerns raised.
The 10-Minute Live Stream Limit change was driven by the significant AWS infrastructure costs associated with cloud-tunneled live streaming.
Legacy Support: Users who prefer the previous behavior and wish to avoid the placeholder can continue to use version 6.0.x, which remains available.
Also a comment about Content Moderation and "Free Speech" was made. The "Pending Approval" status on our forum is a security measure, not censorship. We are currently targeted by sophisticated spam bots posting phishing links. We welcome all constructive feedback, regardless of whether it is critical as long as it is done in a respectfull way.

Hello !
Does this limitation stop audio feeds if the camera audio is mapped to another camera ?
Kind regards

Norman Would you consider disabling this alert for local networks, i.e. not connected to Nx Cloud?
My network is only accessible internally or via my own VPN; it's not touching Nx's AWS infrastructure.

Hi rdrr,
At this moment I don't anticipate any changes in the behavior of this feature.

It makes sense from the AWS point of view but not so much on an isolated network, but, only if…? I'll explain bellow.
There must be a significant amount of NX servers running more cameras for live view than licenced or not licenced at all for this to be implemented.
I must admit that was a real nicety of NX to be able to run it fully minus recording indefinitely, without paying for a single licence which it why I can understand someone might get upset with the change however I don't sympathise if someone doesn't at least have 1 paid licence.
NX can't pay the bills by suppling a mostly free software.
Perhaps that might have been the softer approach? If someone has a paid licence, they can live view X number of cameras uninterrupted for without before requiring an additional licence for live view locally. Just get rid of AWS access if someone doesn't have a licence to cover the device, why incur that cost at all after the trial period?
If a 60-camera server has 50 licences and routinely views 60 live view I can understand the burden of the extra AWS streaming costs, multiplied over clients this cost would add up very quickly.
This is why I think the port forward reward would work better. If you can get client to server connections off the cloud, wouldn’t we all win?
I personally don’t use the NX cloud connection to my server as it is too slow to load, I connect directly via port forwarding. Perhaps I should get more vocal about it as I ignore it at this point as I have the port forwarding connection work around.
I only rely on the cloud connection for push notifications. I have cloned the NX android app with Parallel Space (Paid for it) to bypass the main NX app for cloud connection for live view.
I've only stumbled across this implementation today accidently. I have some construction next door at come that I want to keep an extra eye on temporarily, no recording required. While playing with the camera it popped up.
All though I understand, sadly, this is the first instance I can think of NX removing functionality of its software for a licenced user (I’m only a small fry with 9 licences and a home server), however I am a CCTV installer for my employer who does install NX on large sites.
I really hope not but I can’t help but think the lifetime licence model is going to end sooner than I thought.
This is the first big red flag I’ve seen supporting this. From here at some point soon I can see NX at some point saying that the cloud costs are too much to support the existing user base of lifetime licences and will force existing lifetime licence holders onto an initial discounted cloud subscription model.

Hi Dan,
Thank you for your thoughtful feedback and for your long-term support as an installer. I'd like to clarify a few points to address your concerns:
- Legacy Version Support: For systems dedicated to live viewing only without recording, users are not forced to upgrade. We maintain an archive of past releases, allowing you to run version 6.0.x without this life viewing limitation.
- The Feature Design: While we appreciate your suggestion regarding port-forwarding and local-only thresholds, the vast majority of our user base relies on Nx Cloud. Streamlining the logic across the board was the most consistent way to manage rising infrastructure costs.
- Existing Lifetime Licenses: Any lifetime licenses you have already purchased remain fully valid. You can continue to use them on your systems as long as you want, and we still support hardware migrations with up to 3 license deactivations.
- Cloud Compatibility: While we did recently End-of-Life (EOL) cloud support for older versions (v5.0 and below) to optimize development resources, we provided advance notifications and free upgrades to a newer version to ensure users weren't abruptly disconnected.
We appreciate you sharing your perspective with us.
Kind regards.

Greetings, Norman,
This discussion and transparency is appreciated, thank you.
We are also a long-time user on our own, isolated network, not utilizing NxCloud. This update with the live streaming limit notices was a startling surprise for our users, and caused concern that our licenses were not valid. After discovering this thread, it was clear again.
We also respectfully request that the NX team please reconsider supporting those of us who don't use the cloud service, and provide a way to disable the live stream limit alert. This functionality was part of how we chose the NX platform and invested in our camera licenses for recording. This feels like a retraction of functionality that was present in the system when originally purchased. There is no realistic workaround since we rely on updates to your software platform (required to keep pace with modern OS), and the alert is quite disruptive for our users' experience using NX.
Please reconsider, and keep the strong, trustworthy support NX customers have come to rely on you for. There should be no operational cost to NX to do so, and it restores the software platform functionality as originally sold.
We value your engagement on this.
Kind regards, -Forest

Thank you for your feedback Forest.

Forest,
This won't be reverted. NX has obviously identified an opportunity for revenue growth by forcing users to buy additional licenses to continue using the software in the same way they had before.
This ultimately has a real financial impact on the affordability on deploying this software in larger environments that wasn't a factor before which has had made other platforms more financially viable for one of our customers so far.
It has been a very technical challenge integrating a different cctv solution with a customers existing installation + access control, but given the size of the site the cost of purchasing additional licenses was significant enough to abandon the platform.

Hi Dan,
Thanks for sharing your perspective. To offer some transparency on our side, this decision isn't about driving license sales, we don't expect or see a sudden surge in revenue from this change.
Instead, it comes down to operational sustainability:
- Lowering Cloud Infrastructure Expenses: Free live streaming incurs real cloud relay costs. Lowering these expenses allows us to reallocate those resources directly into ongoing platform development.
- Reducing Support Overhead: Minimizing the support overhead spent on unlicensed use lets us focus our time and assistance on the customers who invest in the software.
- Sustained Investment: For those who want access to new features, performance updates, and ongoing enhancements in v6.1 and beyond, the small license fee keeps the model fair and sustainable for everyone.
If you still want to use the VMS completely for free and without the live-view placeholder, you can continue using version 6.0, which remains fully functional as it is.
Best regards.

Thank you for your detailed reply.
Currently it's not clear where operational sustainability is impacted by this feature? We are asking about a self-hosted, non-cloud installation that had a specific, useful feature on your software license in the past. It involved viewing these streams without interruption using only our own infrastructure, no overhead or resources from Nx consumed.
That feature (which was sold with the original license) was taken away without any compensation or recompense. Can you see how that could undermine trust in your license model, since a feature that was included before (and part of our evaluation and decision to buy, honestly) was removed through a unilateral decision. It degrades the covenant of what the feature-set includes.
This feature that you took away has zero impact to your infrastructure expenses or support overhead. I hope there is not a misunderstanding here.
The suggested concession of using the older version of the VMS software is not tenable, as you and your engineers must be aware, due to forward compatibility with other platform components such as the OS and camera protocols. This is not a valid solution.
Please reconsider. We want to keep our high esteem for Nx and its offerings, not live in doubt that some other critical feature we paid for may be suddenly retracted in future.
Respectfully, -Forest

Hi Forest
Thank you for the feedback.
Cloud connectivity is a core part of our architecture and company strategy. We focus our developer resources on cloud-connected systems, as non-cloud setups represent a negligible portion of our user base.
While I understand this change feels restrictive, focusing only on the placeholder overlooks the extensive new features and performance enhancements delivered in new releases.
While I don't expect this placeholder policy to change, we always want to help find a practical path forward. If your Site already holds a substantial number of licenses and need a few more to cover live viewing, and no recording, please reach out to your Authorized Nx Reseller. They can loop in our Sales team to see what arrangements might be possible for your deployment.
Best regards.

Is disabling the interrupting popup for non-cloud installations not an option? It seems like that would satisfy everyone's concerns: Nx resources not used for cloud deployments, and current self-hosted customers continue to use the features they paid for. Just a thought.

We are having the same error “Live Streaming Time Limit Reached” after updating it to the latest version, 6.1.2.42921. Is there any way we can rollback the version? Where we can have the installation.

Hi Forest,
To clarify a fundamental point: live streaming itself is part of our free software tier anyone could obtain and use, free of charge. I would completely agree with your point about taken-away features if this applied to paid licenses, for instance, if we had restricted archive retention time on licenses you already bought.
Regarding your suggestion, disabling this mechanism for non-cloud setups isn't an option. Cloud integration is a core, essential element of our software architecture, it handles critical features like license management, update delivery, system health, and unified administration beyond just remote connectivity. On the contrary, we invest heavily in our cloud platform and continually add features with every release that depend directly on it.
As mentioned previously, I don't anticipate any changes to this placeholder policy. That said, if your site currently runs a significant number of licenses and simply requires a few additional ones to cover live-viewing displays without recording, please contact your Authorized Nx Reseller. They can coordinate directly with our Sales team to explore what options or special arrangements might be available for your specific installation.
Since we’re starting to retrace the same points on this topic, I’ll leave the next step with you to reach out to your reseller so we can help you find a practical path forward.
Best regards.

Hi Dan,
Thanks for sharing your perspective. To offer some transparency on our side, this decision isn't about driving license sales, we don't expect or see a sudden surge in revenue from this change.
I'm not so sure that driving licence sales isn't a motivation. If NX didn't make money, NX wouldn't exist. I personally see this as a long term sales strategy geared at getting users reliant on the platform and essentially having little other option than to pay for the additional licenses to continue to use the software in the same way they had originally.
Instead, it comes down to operational sustainability:
- Lowering Cloud Infrastructure Expenses: Free live streaming incurs real cloud relay costs. Lowering these expenses allows us to reallocate those resources directly into ongoing platform development.
I understand this but NX has gone nuclear on the end result. You have gone from yes to NO. Was the option to limit the remote stream to at least an un-interrupted sub-stream? As mentioned by myself and others, our deployments don't rely on the cloud connection. They are on local LANs. We are essentially treated the same way as a total non licensed user.
- Reducing Support Overhead: Minimizing the support overhead spent on unlicensed use lets us focus our time and assistance on the customers who invest in the software.
Again, I understand. However I and my customers are licensed users that have invested considerably.
- Sustained Investment: For those who want access to new features, performance updates, and ongoing enhancements in v6.1 and beyond, the small license fee keeps the model fair and sustainable for everyone.
“Small license fee” is subjective. What might seem like a small cost to you can be come quite significant for the end user that has to be explained to that they suddenly have to purchase a bunch of extra licenses to use the system in the same way they already do.
If you still want to use the VMS completely for free and without the live-view placeholder, you can continue using version 6.0, which remains fully functional as it is.
I have absolutely no doubt in my mind that the clock is ticking on this one.

Hi Dan,
I always strive to be open and honest, and I don't feel the need to argue to prove that, at the end of the day, I just need to be comfortable with who I see in the mirror. You're welcome to believe or doubt what I've shared, but that is where I stand.
If your site already operates a large number of licenses and you only need a few more to handle live-viewing displays without recording, please reach out to your Authorized Nx Reseller. They can work directly with our Sales team to discuss potential arrangements or custom options tailored to your installation.
Since we have covered the key details here, the best next step is to connect with your reseller so we can assist you in finding a practical solution forward.
Best regards.

As a representative for NX you are by default biased to defend the decisions of the company to protect your role at the company which is understandable. I would do the same also in your position. Its not personal, I just have to assume that's the motivation.

This is disappointing to read. Your essentially saying that $ignificant $ites may be afforded potential options. The smaller sites can deal with it I guess?
You have essentially confirmed my suspicions of the motivations behind this change. I'm not going to argue with you anymore on this. You have explicitly made NX's position on this matter clear and your firmness around it is a clear that this was never up for debate and what is, is what WILL be.
I honestly never thought I'd have a reason to talk down of NX.

Hi Dan,
I'll leave your personal judgment of me to you.
Before making the assumption, I truly encourage you to reach out to your Authorized Nx Reseller and if required, loop in our Sales team to see what is possible for your specific situation. The sales channels are where tailored options are handled.
We always try to accommodate as many users as possible, even if we can't satisfy every individual preference. I'll leave that option open for you, and I wish you the best.
Best regards.
