NX Witness Object Detection Not Working as Expected
CompletedHello,
I have recently started using DW Spectrum (Server 5.1.2.37996) with an EmpireTech (Dahua - latest firmware) camera with in-camera analytics and I am struggling to get object detection to work as expected.
The only way I have been able to successfully get an object to be detected and appear in the Objects tab is if I have a specific Analytics Event or Analytics Object Detected event rule explicitly configured for that camera. When I do so and, for example, a person is detected the particular rule will trigger and I will see the object detected tag/metadata in the Objects tab.
However, my understanding is that the camera is always running the object detection and sending the metadata to the server regardless of what rules I have configured. My expectation would be that any time an object is successfully detected that I would see that tag in the Objects tab whether viewing live footage or reviewing archive footage even if I don't have any specific analytics event rules configured. My concern would be that I set up a very specific intrusion detection or trip wire rule for security notifications but lose the ability to see objects in archived footage that were successfully detected but did not trigger that specific rule.
I would like to understand if my expectation of how the system should operate is wrong or if there is some error in my system configuration/setup.
Any help/guidance would be greatly appreciated!

Just following up on this. Can anyone provide any clarification? I have followed the document "Troubleshooting Analytics Issues for Cameras and Plugins" to understand the issue better and what I am seeing in the analytics logs is continuing to line up with what I see in the UI/Client. If I create an event rule then the object detection works/tags successfully. If no rule exists then nothing happens.
Do I have something configured wrong, or is there something else going on here?
Or is the standard operating procedure here to just create an event rule to create a bookmark for every object detected?
Thanks in advance!

Hi WallaWalla,
This is the expected behavior and the limitation of Dahua API. It passes the metadata over the event notification message, instead of using streaming protocol. That's why the user needs to configure the analytic event first, in order to receive the detected object.
Thank you.

Hi Wendy,
Thank you so much for your reply. That is the exact clarification I was looking to gain (though I'm a little disappointed as I otherwise am liking these Dahua cameras).
Other than Digital Watchdog/Axis cameras, is there a camera manufacturer that has better native support for in-camera analytics with the NX platform? I.e. continuous object detection/tracking, advanced object search, video metadata, etc. Would it be Hanwah and/or Hikvision?
Thank you again for your support!

Hi WallaWalla,
We have various integrations, and therefore, I recommend consulting with the manufacturer for details on their different series of models.
You can also refer to the related topic in our support article, which includes test models that have been verified by our QA team.
Thank you.
