One of the main things I was thinking about was having it available spur of the moment if needed without having to install something first, and also on Chromebooks/Chromebox/Chromebit devices. 

Perhaps you could use an I/O Module (Axis P8221) and hook it up to an electric eye to turn on/off when the lights change? I haven't tried this, just guessing.

Also this similar suggestion.http://support.networkoptix.com/hc/en-us/community/posts/205003068 I'm wondering, has there been any progress toward this?

Cloud layer?  Oh please, do elaborate. (on the blog or in the next Youtube video perhaps)
