    Hi Miguel Câmara,

    I know what you feel. Before I worked for Nx, and offered my first Nx VMS with 70 cameras, I offered 2 powerful servers with double Xeon CPU and 16 GB RAM each. Of course this worked out fine, but hardware cost a fortune vs what was sufficient.

    Nowadays, for my home system I run 2 servers with ancient Celeron CPU and 4 GB ram (2 GB would have done the job as well). And I only have 2 for the failover. For testing, I have a handful of RPI's and my virtual machines on my laptop, and that just does the job and I can create systems with hundreds of cameras with minimal effort to test and reproduce cases.

    Pitfalls arise with larger systems or with systems with more extreme demands, such as extremely high resolutions, intensive bandwidth (MJPEG), excessive rules, and many clients connecting to a server. But even then, more servers are often the better and more affordable option than more powerful servers.

    Some guidance for challenging system can be found in THIS support article. For all other systems, the default recommended server specifications suffice.

    Hi Norman,

    We need to define 3 servers hardware configurations for 3 given scenaries.

    SCENARY 1

    • 15 cameras 1920x1080PX
    • 5 cameras 4k

    SCENARY 2

    • 25 cameras 1920x1080PX
    • 10 cameras 4k

    SCENARY 3

    • 50 cameras 1920x1080PX
    • 20 cameras 4k

    COMPONENTS

    • 200GB M.2 NV
    • 2TB SSD for video storage
    • 16GB DDR4 Ram
    • USB-C to Ethernet adapter to store captured video on a NAS

    This machine handled 30 cameras 1920x1080 and 5 4k like nothing. That showed we were not doing a good work dimensionating these NVR.

     

    Could you plz recommend a hardware server that is not an overkill for these 3 scenaries. That will help us a lot to understand better this tasks. We are old school.

    Hi Miguel Dina,

    You can use the system calculator for these scenarios, but the calculator is conservative, and won't recommend minimum hardware recommendation.

    If you really want to use the minimum required, it is a matter of trial and error, since it is impossible to take into consideration the performance of each brand/model CPU, each RAM module in relation to the motherboard, housing, and not in the least consideration; thermal characteristics as a whole.

    Also, the OS plays a role. You can imagine that a headless installation uses less resources than an OS with a desktop. And then there are difference between the various OS.

    I can imagine situations where a passively cooled i7 CPU with 16 GB RAM stowed away in a closet can perform a lot worse than an actively cooled Pentium CPU with 4 GB RAM in a cooled computer room.

    The entry-level device you picked does the job for you, so why change? It has more benefits, like one-size-fits-all (most) situations, simple stock, simple replacement, simple configuration, etc.

    Look at it as a whole system, would saving 100USD on the server really make a difference for the system as a whole (cameras, network, cabling, licenses, labor, warranty, service, etc.).

    It might when you're competing with cheap NVRs, but there are other USPs for an VMS opposed to an NVR, like;

    1. Flexibility
    2. Scalability
    3. Usability
    4. Integrations
    5. But, maybe the most important; Security. Besides update for the VMS itself, the OS on the server regularly receives updates, while for NVRs, typically you get what you bought, firmware updates rarely touches the OS on the device itself.

    Of course there are many more, but that last pro should be worth the difference to any NVR.
