How to Set Sub Stream as the Default Resolution When Double-Clicking a Camera in Nx Witness 6.1.3
AnsweredDear Network Optix Support Team,
I would like to configure Nx Witness Desktop Client to use the **secondary (low-resolution) stream by default whenever I double-click a camera in the Resource Tree to open its live video**.
Currently, the camera opens using the Auto resolution mode, which may select the primary (high-resolution) stream. I would like to force the client to use the secondary stream by default when opening live video, rather than relying on Auto mode.
**System Environment**
- Operating System: Windows 11 IoT Enterprise LTSC, version 24H2
- Nx Witness Desktop Client: Version 6.1.3.43301
I followed the instructions provided in the following Network Optix Community post:
I created the following configuration file:
`%LOCALAPPDATA%\nx_ini\desktop_client.ini`
The file contains:
`defaultResolution=low`
I also tried the following format:
`defaultResolution="low"`
After completely restarting the Desktop Client and creating a new layout, double-clicking a camera still opens the live video with the resolution mode set to **Auto**, rather than Low.
I have also verified that manually selecting **Resolution → Low** successfully switches the camera to its secondary stream. Therefore, the secondary stream is available and working correctly.
**Questions**
1. Is `defaultResolution="low"` supported in Nx Witness Desktop Client version 6.1.3.43301?
2. Is there a different configuration file location, INI parameter, or registry setting required to make the secondary stream the default when double-clicking a camera in the Resource Tree?
3. Is it possible to configure this behavior so that newly opened live camera views always use the secondary stream by default, while switching to the primary stream only when the camera is maximized or viewed full screen?
4. If this functionality is not supported in version 6.1.3.43301, is there a recommended workaround or a newer version that supports it?
I would appreciate your guidance on the correct configuration for this version.
Thank you for your assistance.

Hi AllenWu,
The method changed:
To change the default video resolution in the Nx Witness Desktop Client, please follow these steps:
- Locate the settings folder for your operating system:
-
Windows:
C:\Users\<Username>\AppData\Local\Network Optix\Network Optix Nx MetaVMS Client\settings\local -
Linux:
~/.local/share/Network Optix/Network Optix HD Witness Client/settings/local -
macOS:
~/Library/Application Support/Network Optix/Network Optix HD Witness Client/settings/local
-
- Configure the resolution file:
- Look for a file named
defaultResolution(note: this file has no file extension). If it does not exist, create a new plain text file with this exact name. - Open the file in a text editor and add one of the following values:
-
Low: forces streams to load in low resolution by default. -
High: forces streams to load in high resolution. -
Auto: resets to default behavior, allowing the client to determine resolution automatically based on network and layout conditions.
-
- Look for a file named
- Save the file and restart the client for the changes to take effect.
Best regards.
