USB 3.1 Storage - Yes/No?
AnsweredHi,
Considering testing USB 3.1 storage enclosures with a budget type NVR.
Read some NX Witness articles mentioning to take in bandwidth considerations etc. Are there other considerations i'm not thinking of?
Looking at running 2x8TB WD PURPLE Pros, in an enclosure with a fan, that supports up to 10Gbps. The 8TB HDD's support ~2 Gbps each (265MB/s).
I've used the storage calculator from NX, and something like 16 cameras would only utilise 100MB/s via H265 codec.
Am i not taking something into consideration here as to why this would be a bad idea? (perhaps random read/write speed of USB 3.1 interface?)
Have the NX team actually ran tests with USB 3.1 storage at all?

Hi @...,
To answer your last question first;
Have the NX team actually ran tests with USB 3.1 storage at all?
No, we haven't done any specific storage tests with USB storage.
That being said, if the capacity of the disks and the USB connection is sufficient to manage the IOPS, you should be fine.
One of theĀ most common bottlenecks could be the USB connection on the server. Some servers, especially the more affordable ones, might share PCI lanes for various I/O's on the server board. For example, quite a few ARM single board computers share the same PCI lane for (multiple) USB and (multiple) NIC, and therefore lowering the capacity significantly of these I/O's.
Some additional guidance can be found HERE.

I see, thanks Norman.
Still just using an i5 NUC at this stage.
Was going to test some ARM based server setups with external storage also, so will keep this in mind and actually run some benchmarks for various read/write speeds.
Thanks.
