Upgrade problem on Ubuntu 24.04 server
AnsweredAt the beginning of March, I downloaded and installed the nxwitness-server-6.1.0.42176-linux_x64.deb package (latest version) on a fresh Ubuntu 24.04 server (no desktop UI). Registered to Nx Cloud, running fine so far.
Now I tried to upgrade to 6.1.1.42649 using the download of the latest 6.1.x version:
sudo apt install ./metavms-server-6.1.1.42649-linux_x64.deb
This failed. Forcing the update with dpkg -i --force-overwrite … went thru, but the version displayed in the cloud did not change.
Turns out the package has been renamed from networkoptix-mediaserver to networkoptix-metavms-mediaserver. Same for the installation dir in /opt/… and the system services. Now I have 2 parallel installs: the old one still working, and the new one unconfigured. I found no mention of this in the release notes.
Am I doing the update process wrong? Is it not possible to run the update in the server CLI, should I initiate it always from the Client UI, as described in the User Manual? Would that work, despite the package name change?
BTW, I restored the whole server from a backup, it is running fine on the old version. Just looking for clarification about how to upgrade on Ubuntu server.

Hi Werner,
Please note that Nx Witness and Nx Meta VMS are distinct products. Because they are separate platforms, it is completely normal to have two different instances running under their respective names.
To clarify the difference between the two:
- Nx Witness is our official production VMS, which you can download at nxvms.com.
- Nx Meta VMS is our dedicated developer platform, available for download at meta.nxvms.com.
When it comes to updating your system, we highly recommend following the instructions outlined in our user manual. Specifically, we advise performing the update directly through the Nx Desktop Client. This ensures seamless compatibility, allowing your Desktop Client to successfully connect to the newly updated Mediaserver version without interruption.
While it is theoretically possible to update the system via the command line (as you previously attempted), please be aware that this method is untested and not officially supported. To avoid potential system instabilities, we strongly recommend sticking to the Desktop Client for future updates.
Please let us know if you have any further questions.
Best regards.

Oh silly me, somehow I ended up on the wrong download page - this is slightly embarassing
Thanks for pointing out the preferred upgrade path. Will try tonight.
Best regards

No worries Werner. Humans make mistakes, but at least you make a backup.
