    In its default configuration, the Video Management System (VMS) periodically accesses the HDDs. However, if you use enterprise-grade drives designed for continuous surveillance workloads, mechanical wear shouldn't be an issue. In fact, you will likely see higher wear on your system's SSD due to constant data caching and write cycles.

    If your goal is to minimize power consumption or wear by allowing the HDDs to hibernate, you have two main approaches:

    • The Turnkey Approach (Recommended): You can integrate a specialized storage solution, such as a Veracity COLDSTORE unit. These systems feature a proprietary disk-management architecture that sequentially spins up drives only when writing data, ensuring that your video remains fully indexed and instantly accessible at any time without unnecessary wear.
    • The Custom Integration Approach: Alternatively, you can create a third-party script or application to temporarily store recordings on the SSD and batch-transfer them to the HDDs at specific times. However, because this bypassed data isn’t natively indexed by the VMS, any recorded footage would require a manual data indexation process before it can be played back. Depending on the volume of footage, this indexation can be incredibly time-consuming. Setting this up requires advanced proficiency with scripting and APIs, and the development effort rarely justifies the minimal power savings.
