Axis Bullet Companion LE - RTSP Stream PLAY error
AnsweredI am trying to add an Axis Companion Bullet LE which was connected to a previous NX system.
Even with the same settings we receive the following error :
FAILED: Camera request "rtsp://172.16.100.142:554/axis-media/media.amp?Axis-Orig-Sw=true" failed with error "Can't open RTSP stream: PLAY request has been failed". Please try to reboot the camera, then restore factory defaults on the web-page. Finally, try to update firmware. If the problem persists, please contact support.
Already upgraded the firmware.
The stream plays fine in VLC with no packet loss or connection errors.

Hi @...,
The notification you share, seems like an Onvif issue.
Can you check in the Onvif Device Manager (ODM) if it is possible to get the live stream of the camera for both streams?
In THIS support article you can find some guidelines and a download link to the ODM.

No support article attached ...
Probably this URL you meant.https://support.networkoptix.com/hc/en-us/articles/216517857-ONVIF-Camera-troubleshooting-guide
But the camera is not ONVIF capable.
Is has an RTSP stream which was working fine in the past. (and still working in VLC and other media players)
After reboot cameras where in error.0 -
Error from the diagnostics is the following:
Confirming target camera provides media stream.
FAILED: Camera request "rtsp://172.16.100.142:554/axis-media/media.amp?Axis-Orig-Sw=true" failed with error "Can't open RTSP stream: PLAY request has been failed". Hi @...,
That was, indeed, the article I wanted to link to.
Regarding:
- Please try to reboot the camera,
- then restore factory defaults on the web-page.
- Finally, try to update firmware.
I read you did nr. 3, but did you do 1 and 2 as well?
In what version of the Nx Witness VMS was it successful and in what version of Nx Witness VMS it wasn't successful? Is the camera only connected to Nx Witness VMS, or to other VMS or NVRs as well?
Could you forward the camera, so we can add it to our test environment for further investigations?

I did all the actions when updating to the 9.80.2.4 (Axis Companions Bullit LE)
Also tested the same procedure with v8.40.4I think Vanilla version 4 of NX worked fine.
After some time I did an update which resulted in loss of that type of camera (we have 3 atm)So then I did all the above actions (reboot/factory/update etc...)
There is no other NVR attached atm and is currently setup to be rolled out in production.
Camera's are mounted in production environment so I cannot forward them to you.
I can give access via VPN to that specific camera.

Hi @...,
Please try Nx Witness 4.1.0.31398 to connect to the camera.
If this version fails as well, please share the VPN details to <removed-emailaddress>.0 -
That's the version I am using.
When wiresharking the Axis camera, this is the result.
When the play command is given (after SETUP which auths also) then a forbidden is given.
This is probably due to the missing Query String (Axis-Origin-Sw=true) when requesting PLAY from RTSP.

Hi Vincent,
I tried to access the VPN, but I got an authentication failure.
Could you check the credentials? I copy/pasted them from the email.
Although the companion line-up is a bit different, I tried to add some other Axis cameras with the following URL format:
rtsp://<ip_address>:<port>/axis-media/media.amp and all models I tried, from my home system (P1435-LE) and the virtual loan cameras of Axis (M2026-LE, Q1785) worked out just fine on 4.1.0.31398 and other version of 4.1 as well.Your Wireshark screenshot shows HTTP 403, in general this is a permission issue in the network. I would discuss this with the sysadmin to check if there are any limitations in the routing within the network.

Normally you can't add an Axis Companion camera to a VMS other than Axis Companion software or their dedicated Companion recorder.
They made these cameras more cost effective but you have to use their VMS.Axis has specific firmware for these camera which prevent connecting to a third party a VMS like Network Optix. This could be the reason that its difficult to add the RTSP stream in NX.

OK, so I went back a few firmware versions.
9.80.2 -> 8.40.41 -> 8.10.1 -> 7.40.1
(going directly from 9 to 7 gives a signature error)and finally the stream came back!!!
So it seems that in later firmware versions the RTSP stream is broken.
