New! Quicksync Support in September 2020 Monthly Patch.
CompletedIn our latest monthly patch we introduced a very cool new experimental feature - Desktop Client-side Intel Quicksync enabled decoding.
Intel® Quick Sync Video uses the dedicated media processing capabilities of Intel® Graphics Technology to decode and encode fast, enabling the processor to complete other tasks and improving system responsiveness. Vastly improves the ability of low power hardware (e.g. Intel Atom, Celeron) and the ability of the Desktop Client to decode very high resolution (e.g. 16 MP, 32MP) cameras and streams.
You can learn more about the feature on the Nx Youtube Channel (make sure to subscribe!)

Is it wise to turn on Hardware decoding for more powerful processors such as i7-11700? Ive tried and it just seems to make video scrubbing while reviewing much worse. I do see a drastic CPU decrease but the performance is degraded when scanning footage quickly using the playhead.

Hi Calvin Wientjes,
I would recommend using HW decoding when it is necessary to squeeze some performance from your device. But an i7 will be just fine for most tasks.
I just tried it on a Windows laptop with an i5 and a Linux laptop with an i7 and the behavior was equal, with or without the HW decoding, except a lower CPU load.
I'm not sure which version you are using, but a couple of months ago, there was an issue with scrubbing which was resolved in a patch.
You might use the latest patch to resolve the issue you experience.

I have tested in two separate devices. One I7 with 5 mp q series Hanwha cameras.
One i5 with a mix of 2,5, and 8 MP cameras for testing. I noticed a difference in performance on both machines. Not a big deal. I just leave it off. I was contemplating if I should be putting gpus in my server builds that will be server and client machines. Recent one is 21 5mp cameras. Set to auto on a layout with all cams. CPU usually 40-50%. It’s been having freezes and the recording stops until the customer comes back into the office and shuts down the computer. Windows 10 up to date with updates. Core i7-10700, 16gb ram, m.2 nvme OS drive . 2 internal sata 8TB purple drives. Dual NIC separate camera network. I’m searching for a cause and considered a gpu and thought about using HW decoding as well.
The build number and password came back saying no build found.
