Access to recorded images on DVR/NVR

Is it possible, in any way, to access the images recorded directly on the hard drives of DVRs/NVRs through NX? Or will external storage always be required?

Local storage on a DVR or NVR cannot be utilized. Instead, you'll need to use local storage on the VMS server or an external storage solution such as a NAS, SAN, or similar device.
