Stuck updates breaks Ubuntu NX server
AnsweredThis is the second time that this has happened to me, so bringing it up incase someone has experienced the same. I run NX on an Unraid box, with 2 servers, one in a Windows VM and one in a Ubuntu LTS CLI, 18.0* in this case.
NX was acting a little slow for whatever reason and there were updates waiting (6.0.0 (yes know)) so I decided to run the updates. Updates went fine on the Windows Client and Server, though the Linux server just got stuck on installing. After leaving it for 30 min to install, I just decided to complete the updates and restart the Linux VM.
While the Linux VM seems to have started properly at the NX Login, the NX client cant find it, even though the IP is the same and I can ping it from the NX client. I just cant log into the client as I set it up so many years ago.
Has anyone experienced the same and been able to recover the server, as this isnt a once off event for me, and I would like to get the server up and running ASAP and need to recover the NX licenses.
The update also seems to break the link from the Windows server to the Unraid share, but I think thats an Unraid issue and I'm sure that I can just create a new share in Unraid to fix this.

Hi Calypso,
I hope you’re doing well! I noticed that this topic hasn’t received any engagement from the community yet, and I wanted to check in with you. Is the issue you mentioned still relevant or something you’re looking to resolve?
Best regards.

Hi Calypso,
I don’t want to spark a debate about the best operating system, but I can share that my Ubuntu servers have been running flawlessly since at least August 2019 and September 2019, and likely even longer.
If I were to make an educated guess, it seems that Unraid might be related to the issue you’re experiencing. What I’d recommend is logging into the Ubuntu VM, upgrading it to at least version 20.04 (or the newer versions like 22.04 LTS or for 6.0.1, 24.04 LTS), and then downloading and reinstalling the server package for Ubuntu. This approach will not only update your system but also bypass any potential conflicts related to Unraid.
That said, if you’re satisfied with Windows, feel free to make the switch! THIS article provides step-by-step instructions on how to preserve your data during the transition.
