NX Witness Server on Device Running Venus OS or on a Router?
AnsweredI have a camera on a solar-powered system in a remote location, with internet access via an expensive and not-too-fantastic 4G connection. In other posts it appears to be a very good idea to house NX Witness Server on an SBC like RPi in the same box of electronics on the same network as the camera. I will be working towards this.
Others will be working with similar remote set-ups like this and like me may have invested in a device that monitors remotely the health of that battery, to optimise operation time of the camera. In my case that is a Victron Cerbo GX. Victron makes the Venus OS of the Cerbo available to all and it can be installed on a RPi, but I considered that to be a bit beyond me and I paid the extra for the proprietary device. However, it means I have a small computer in the box already.
Has anyone considered installing NX Witness Server on a device running Venus OS or its cousin Venus OS Large, be that a Cerbo or a SBC like RPi? The small amount of information online indicates that the Venus OS might be too heavily modified to be able to add other software to the device, but it would be great to hear from some more technically minded people on this one.
And to complete this series of questions, is it remotely feasible to mount NX Witness Server on a good 4G modem router?

Hi Barry Dent,
You can't install Nx on Venus OS, or maybe you can (if it is debian/Ubuntu derivate), but there is a risk of dependencies issues, and you won't be able to do an ordinary update of the VMS.
I did come along an article about running Venus OS as a VM, meaning that you could use Ubuntu as the host OS, and set up a VM with Venus OS.
Also, it is important to verify the architecture of the computer. If is x64, AMD or Intel, no worries. If it is ARM, it has to be a supported ARM SBC, otherwise we can't offer any support and compatibility might break in the future.

Thanks Norman Graafsma. One further question. I am considering deploying an Odroid N2+ in my solar-powered set-up, because it can be powered directly by 12V DC as opposed to the USB-C of Raspberry Pi 4B (which probably means I have to buy a good-quality DC-DC converter that is more expensive than the Pi itself). The Odroid N2+ is not mentioned in your list of supported platforms for NX Witness Server. It has "a quad-core ARM Cortex-A73 CPU cluster and a dual core Cortex-A53 cluster with a new generation Mali-G52 GPU". I take this to be rather similar to the Quad-core Cortex-A72 of RPi 4B. The Odroid N2+ can run "Ubuntu 20.04 LTS images... with Kernel version 4.9.230 LTS". I'm not expecting ongoing official support, but do you think there is a good chance that Server will run correctly on Odroid N2+ with an Ubuntu 20.04 OS? Thanks.

Hi Barry Dent,
We have more customers who use Odroid SBC for the mediaserver application, so I expect no issues, as long as you use a support OS. Unfortunately, at this moment it isn't possible for us to validate and thus support all ARM SBC, but we are working on improvement and aiming to release a benchmark tool later this year.
