Is time sync on the cameras required?
AnsweredHi, I'm just wondering if NX Witness requires its cameras to be syncronised to a time server? And if so, what's the reason? I'm aware the server itself should be time synchronised. But just to save time, if there is no reason to sync all of the cameras as well, I'll know that I don't need to bother with doing so.
I know it's a requirement with other VMS I work on. But I can't seem to find documentation on the matter for NX Witness.

Hi,
https://www.campana.vi.it/articles/why-is-NTP-important-in-CCTV/
You will read that is important for all the devices to be synced in the network in order to communicate caue some protocols use timestamp.

Why ? If you just want an answer, it's yes, you have to synchronize all of the devices on your CCTV network (cameras, servers, clients,...). I think the best practice is to sync the server and the cient(s) with a NTP (on internet or not) and in the "Expert" tab on camera parameters, you can uncheck "Keep the camera time" so Nx Server will act as a NTP Server and push the time to your cameras.

I found the explanation I was looking for. I just had to dig a bit deeper into the Nx Witness User Manual:
For anyone else who may be interested:
"By default, Server ignores the time on cameras. However, in some cases it may be necessary, especially for Edge cameras that record archive to the internal storage. In this case it is critical to have the camera time synchronized with Server."
So, on an installation where all cameras are on the same LAN, it is not nessecary to have the cameras time synchronised. Even though it's best practice to have them time synched, it's not nessecary.
